Cyberpunk 2077 Is Getting a Live-Action Film from Paramount and the Producer of Transformers

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a live-action film adaptation. Paramount Pictures has begun work on an adaptation of CD Projekt RED’s hit RPG, with the Polish studio also involved in the project. Production will be led by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe film franchises.

According to Deadline, the live-action film will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce alongside CD Projekt RED, which will be directly involved in bringing its game world to the big screen. Di Bonaventura has extensive experience with big-budget action films and adaptations of well-known franchises.

The project is still in the early stages of development, and further details remain unknown. Paramount has yet to announce a director, screenwriter or cast. It’s also unclear whether the film will retell the story of V and Johnny Silverhand from the original game or take its own path and introduce new characters and events.

The world of Cyberpunk offers plenty of room for standalone stories. The futuristic Night City is full of technological implants, powerful corporations, criminal organizations, and conflicts between individuals and the system. The film therefore doesn’t have to be a direct adaptation of the game to draw on its most compelling elements.

This isn’t the first attempt to bring Cyberpunk to live action. In 2023, CD Projekt RED announced a partnership with Anonymous Content, the company behind the series True Detective and Mr. Robot. At the time, the project was described as an entirely new story set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. It’s not yet clear whether Paramount’s current film is connected to that project or is a separate production.

The franchise has already expanded beyond video games with Netflix’s animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. It’s also getting a follow-up, which premieres on October 20, 2026. The second season will bring a new story and new characters from Night City.

Paramount is also continuing to expand its plans for video game adaptations, which include the Street Fighter and Call of Duty franchises. Cyberpunk 2077 could become another major film project based on a well-known gaming franchise. However, we’ll have to wait for more specific details about the film and its release date.
