What Did the GTA 6 Launch Trailer Reveal?
The trailer hints at Jason’s military past, larger heists and new locations, while showcasing details of the world, from its animals to environmental destruction.
The GTA 6 launch trailer arrived surprisingly early. While it mainly comes across as a rapid montage of action, characters and major story moments, a closer look reveals plenty of new information about the world and its characters. Rockstar expands on Jason’s military past, shows large-scale heists and additional locations across Leonida, and introduces new characters alongside countless details in the open world. Several scenes also suggest that GTA 6 will combine the series’ trademark chaos with more tactical missions and a greater focus on detail.
One of the biggest revelations is Jason’s past in the US military. Previous material had already hinted at his military experience, but the new trailer offers more specific clues. Jason openly says he got into trouble during his service and didn’t leave the military on the best terms, which likely affected his life afterward.
The trailer shows several details:
In one of the most intriguing scenes, Jason moves through the water alongside two other armed men. They are all wearing tactical gear, and Jason has night vision and a suppressed assault rifle. It’s not yet clear whether this is a flashback to his military service or a later mission where he draws on old contacts and experience.
We also see Jason in a helicopter wearing full combat gear. A dog wearing protective goggles is on board, reminiscent of the gear used by real service dogs in military and police operations. It’s unclear whether players will be able to use the dog during gameplay or whether it’s part of a specific story sequence.
Several scenes overall feel much more professional than the improvised heists typical of older GTA games. Jason checks his weapon, communicates through an earpiece and moves like someone with military experience. His past is therefore likely to be more than a detail in his backstory—it could play an important role in how certain missions work.
Lucia gradually adopts a similarly aggressive style. The trailer shows her wearing black tactical gear and wielding a Shrewsbury rotary grenade launcher, which she uses to take out police vehicles during a chase. We then see her hanging from a cargo net beneath a helicopter, likely as part of a larger mission.
The same sequence, or a related one, features:
The building’s destruction is one of the trailer’s most technically impressive moments. It’s not yet clear, however, whether GTA 6 will feature more broadly destructible environments or whether this is a bespoke scene created for a specific mission.
Another major action sequence shows Lucia jumping from a moving car onto a passenger plane. The scene likely follows on from earlier footage in which she fought inside the plane’s cargo hold while it was in flight. Rockstar is apparently preparing several missions on a scale reminiscent of GTA V’s biggest action sequences.
It’s also possible that several scenes Rockstar has shown in different trailers are part of the same large-scale missions. The game itself will likely reveal how the pieces fit together.
Bank heists remain an important part of GTA 6. The trailer again shows a vault full of banknotes, some of which are on fire. This time, though, Lucia is with another accomplice rather than Jason, suggesting that the pair will use a larger crew for bigger jobs.
Other scenes show:
The question remains whether these will be fixed story characters or whether a crew selection system like the one used for heists in GTA V will return.
Raul Bautista once again appears to be one of the more important figures in the criminal underworld. The trailer shows him at a construction site, intimidating a man lying on the ground. The Schlott Construction logo is visible in the background; the company has appeared in GTA Online before.
In GTA 6, though, it likely won’t be just a name on vehicles or billboards. Rockstar appears to be creating physical business premises and headquarters that are directly integrated into the world and missions.
Before the big heists, Jason will likely lead a much more ordinary life. The trailer shows him working with Cal at Brian's Marina, where they clean or repair a motorboat. Other boats, jet skis and marina equipment are visible around them.
Later, however, Jason and Lucia appear in a much more luxurious apartment overlooking the beach. The story may once again follow a familiar series progression, with characters starting out relatively poor and gradually gaining more money, better hideouts and the means to pull off more daring jobs.
Even after leaving prison, Lucia isn’t entirely free of government supervision. An electronic monitor can be seen on her leg in several scenes, likely related to parole or house arrest.
This has led to a theory that the monitor could also serve as a gameplay mechanic that initially restricts access to parts of the map. Rockstar could use it to explain in the story why Lucia can’t reach every part of Leonida at the start. For now, though, that’s only speculation, and the trailer doesn’t confirm such a feature.
The opening also hints at a phone call from Lucia in prison. The story may begin before her release or shortly afterward.
The couple’s relationship remains one of GTA 6’s main themes. Lucia asks Jason if they’re going to be okay, and he replies that they’ve made it through everything together and just need to get through the next problems. Rockstar is once again emphasizing the story of a couple on the run, relying above all on each other.
The trailer also shows them in more personal scenes, including in their shared apartment and in the shower. They aren’t just a pair of characters teaming up for heists—their relationship will likely be a major part of the story.
Among the new characters is Officer Mendez. His gear bears the insignia of a police special unit, and the way Rockstar presents him suggests he’ll have a significant role. He could be one of Jason and Lucia’s main antagonists.
Police units won’t be limited to Vice City, either. One chase features vehicles from Mariana County, an area associated with Leonida Keys. Rockstar continues to show that GTA 6 will cover a much wider area than just the city itself.
The trailer shows several groups that could be new gangs or part of Vice City’s music scene. The heavily tattooed men in the green car bear the letters EW, which may be an abbreviation of the name of a local group.
Another unusual scene shows masked people dancing beside a stockpile of gold assault rifles. The scene is filmed with a camera, so it could be a music video or a promotion for a musical artist rather than a typical criminal scene.
The world’s music scene also features the returning duo Real Dimez, made up of Roxy and Bae-Luxe. They’re signed to Only Raw Records, a label associated with club mogul Boobie Ike, so this part of the world will likely get more attention in the story.
Rockstar hasn’t left out its trademark satire of modern society. A biplane flies over the beach advertising DacityCoin, an obvious parody of cryptocurrency. A person holding a bright pink smoke flare is standing on one of the wings.
It’s not yet clear whether this is just an absurd advertisement in the open world or part of a specific mission. GTA 6 is clearly set to continue poking fun at social media, influencers, tech trends and modern investment crazes.
The trailer offers another glimpse of the range of vehicles in Leonida. Rockstar cuts between city chases, highways, waterways and aerial sequences, and confirms the return of street racing.
Highlights include:
The motorcycle jump could also hint at the return of classic stunt jumps, a long-standing side activity in the series.
GTA 6 will clearly continue building on the series’ shared universe. The trailer shows several names and companies that have appeared in previous games.
These include:
Rather than building the world from scratch, Rockstar is layering in plenty of small references for players who have been following the series for a long time.
Wildlife has a much bigger presence in GTA 6. Rockstar has already shown plenty of animals in previous footage, and the new trailer adds more.
We can see:
The game will also feature a system for discovering and recording animals, so wildlife may be more than just decoration. Leonida will likely feel much more alive than the worlds of previous GTA games.
Rockstar once again shows an extreme level of attention to visual detail. In a gym, we see a character with visible sweat on their skin, while scenes in the shower showcase the rendering of water, wet skin and hair.
The trailer also features detailed glass destruction, reflections in weapon optics, clothing movement and a host of small character animations. These details could be among the biggest generational leaps over GTA V.
Jason uses several types of weapons during the trailer. In one scene, he puts on brass knuckles, which have appeared in various forms in previous entries in the series. Elsewhere, he uses a sniper rifle, with a helicopter visible in the reflection of its scope.
Another scene then shows Jason walking away from a burning helicopter. The two moments may be part of the same mission. Jason also uses a communication earpiece, further reinforcing the impression that some operations will be coordinated and tactical.
Near the end of the new trailer, Lucia is wearing the same gold dress seen in earlier footage. This makes it possible to piece together several scenes into a potential sequence.
It could include:
Rockstar may have been showing snippets of one large story mission for a while, without yet putting them in the correct order.
The trailer is accompanied by Flower in a Hurricane by French duo Justice, featuring Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and SZA. Justice is also set to contribute original music to GTA 6.
The song’s title also has an interesting connection to Leonida’s setting. Rockstar has already hinted at the importance of extreme weather, and a world inspired by Florida naturally brings tropical storms and hurricanes to mind. It’s not yet clear, however, whether the game will feature a dynamic weather system or whether extreme weather will be part of specific story events.
Comparison
People have, of course, started comparing the visuals in the current trailer with those in previous trailers, as well as comparing them with screenshots. The quality is different here, but one is an image and the other is video, so the sharpness isn’t the same. Still, the image gives a good idea of how you can customise the characters.
GTA 6 will be released on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
