GTA VI Will Let Players Explore Hundreds of Interiors and Plan Heists Without Gunfights

Jason Schreier has shared more details from the GTA VI preview Rockstar showed him. This time, the information focuses on gameplay, what Jason and Lucia can do together, heists, money, the police, and the many accessible interiors.

During the presentation, Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson played as Jason, who could call Lucia and suggest spending time together. When she arrived, he could kiss her; the pair could hold hands while walking and then drive around the city together. Rockstar wants to give the two protagonists a stronger connection outside story missions, too.

The pair can also take part in various activities together. In the preview, they headed to a gym, where Lucia ran on a treadmill while Jason did squats. Rockstar describes this kind of free-roam play as a new way to play GTA, with Jason and Lucia’s relationship extending beyond story scenes and missions.

Heists don’t always have to start with a drawn gun

The heist system also looks interesting. Jason and Lucia entered a bank during the preview and first surveyed the situation. Nelson eventually decided that the large number of guards made it not worth robbing, so the pair simply left. Players will be able to scout a potential target first and decide whether the risk is worth the possible reward.

Later, the pair entered the back of a small business, where they were able to disable the alarm and steal money without attracting attention. Heists therefore clearly won’t be limited to shootouts and escapes from the police. In some cases, players will be able to take a much stealthier approach.

It was in this section that Rockstar mentioned the game features hundreds of smaller interiors that players can enter and explore. GTA VI is set to go far beyond GTA V in this respect, where many buildings were little more than part of the open-world scenery.

Cash will matter more

Rockstar is also changing how money works. According to the developers, the cash characters carry will be “vulnerable.” Players can lose it, so they’ll be able to deposit it at ATMs. Rockstar wants money to matter more during gameplay than it did in previous GTA games.

This system also fits with the greater emphasis on petty crimes and open-world activities. Money earned from a heist won’t simply be a number automatically added to the player’s account. Players will also have to make sure they get the loot safely to the bank.

The police will know who they’re looking for

The Wanted system is also being revamped. The police can gather more specific information about suspects and, for example, know that they’re looking for Jason and Lucia as a pair. If both are on the run together, it may be advantageous to split up and continue in different directions.

Players won’t only get into trouble during planned heists, either. Chance encounters with city residents can escalate into arguments, fights, and a subsequent call to the police. Rockstar wants the open-world systems to interact and create situations that weren’t pre-scripted as traditional missions.

According to Schreier, the developers have also spent a lot of time refining how the game feels to control. For example, they experimented with different versions of the weapon wheel and other control elements to make switching between options feel natural and quick.

GTA VI is gradually showing that its biggest leap won’t just be the size of Vice City and the state of Leonida. Rockstar is placing a strong emphasis on what players can do between main missions, from taking a simple walk with Lucia or visiting the gym to planning a heist on the fly.
