Legendary actor Patrick Stewart dies at 86

British actor Patrick Stewart died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. The sad news was announced by his longtime publicist, Kelly Bush Novak. According to her, he spent his final moments surrounded by family and friends, accompanied by live music, prayers, and memories.

Stewart began his career as a stage actor and devoted much of it to Shakespeare’s works. However, it was his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation that brought him worldwide fame. He later reprised the character in several films and in the series Star Trek: Picard.

Another of his best-known roles was Professor Charles Xavier, the founder and leader of the X-Men mutants. Stewart first played him in the 2000 film X-Men and returned to the role repeatedly over the following decades.

He also left a significant mark on video games. In addition to several titles set in the worlds of Star Trek and X-Men, his voice could be heard, for example, in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, where he played Emperor Uriel Septim VII. He also voiced Zobek in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its sequel, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. He also appeared in LEGO Universe and other games. His distinctive voice and theatrical delivery lent weight even to characters who appeared on screen for only a short time.

His final film project is Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently in post-production and is set to arrive in theaters in December.

Patrick Stewart leaves behind an extensive body of work in film, television, theater, and video games. For generations of fans, he will remain above all Captain Picard and Professor Xavier, though his career was far richer than these two iconic roles.
