What Really Happened With Helen Chiang’s Exit From Xbox?

Helen Chiang, who unexpectedly left Microsoft after more than 20 years at the company and just three months as Xbox’s chief operating officer, has spoken publicly about her departure. She denies reports that she was fired for violating internal policies and suggests the circumstances surrounding her exit are considerably more complicated.

Helen posted a lengthy message on LinkedIn titled “Clarity is Kindness.” Xbox’s current head, Asha Sharma, has also used the phrase when discussing her decisions and changes to the leadership of the gaming division. The choice of title may therefore be an indirect criticism of her approach.

The former executive categorically denied speculation that she had leaked confidential information to journalists, planned to join a competitor, or engaged in bullying, discrimination, financial fraud or other misconduct. She also denied that her departure was related to not receiving a higher-level role. She stressed that she had not sought the COO position and was promoted to it by the company in July.

She said she had not actively pursued more senior roles and had last interviewed for a job in 2011. She wanted to stay at Microsoft and help Xbox continue to grow. Her comments therefore suggest her departure was not a planned career move.

Chiang also said she believes in fairness, accountability and applying the rules equally to everyone. However, she has serious concerns about how those principles were applied in her own case. She added that she does not want her departure to be tied to a false story about incompetence, career ambition or scandal. She concluded by saying that she had never imagined her time at the company would end this way and that the public still does not know the whole story.

Is Asha to blame for all of this?

We’ll have to see whether we ever learn the whole story, but since Asha arrived, there have been more and more incidents like this. Other people in the gaming industry have also publicly supported Chiang. Former Xbox executive Shannon Loftis sharply criticized the current leadership in a response on LinkedIn. In her view, spreading false information about Chiang’s departure shows a loss of moral principles and transparency in Xbox leadership. She also suggested that it would be appropriate to investigate who provided the information to the media and why. She called the situation a farce and expressed sympathy for the employees still working in such an environment.

The real reason for her departure remains unknown. Her comments may suggest a conflict with Xbox’s new leadership and differing views on the division’s direction, but she did not confirm this directly.
