World of Warcraft: Forever Launches Surprisingly Smoothly

The launch of World of Warcraft: Forever avoided the major problems that usually accompany a big launch for this MMO. Players did run into a few technical issues, but instead of the usual long queues, server outages, and significant lag, they were met with a much calmer start.

According to European players who tried to log in shortly after the servers went live, queue times were only a few minutes, and they moved fairly quickly. Some ran into an issue where they couldn’t confirm their server selection shortly after launch. Logging in again and rejoining the queue resolved it.

The servers were not significantly overloaded once players got into the game, either. Players reported only occasional delays when casting spells, though there were also some disconnects. Overall, however, it was a much smoother launch than fans are used to with major World of Warcraft releases.

The developers also signaled that they were pleased with how the launch went. Executive Producer Holly Longdale said on social media platform X that things were going relatively well so far. She said the team had prepared thoroughly after the chaotic beta and planned for scenarios that ultimately exceeded their initial expectations.

Senior Designer Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield also pointed out a few minor issues. The megaservers split players into separate layers, and some areas seemed too empty after launch. There were also problems with the large ships and zeppelins used to travel between different parts of the world. The developers temporarily added portals so players could bypass these modes of transport.

After thanking players for a smooth launch, Greenfield signed off by saying he was going home to sleep. He then added that he definitely wouldn’t be playing World of Warcraft: Forever until three in the morning. The community, of course, had its own fun with his remark.

The surprise at the calm launch was also evident on Reddit. Players openly admitted they had expected long waits and connection issues, with some even regretting not taking time off work for the launch. This time, there was no need to spend half the day waiting to get into the game.

The full extent of the launch’s success remains to be seen. European players were getting into the game at night, so it’s unclear how the servers will handle heavier traffic during regular daytime hours. World of Warcraft: Forever follows an exceptionally busy beta that attracted a large number of players. So far, however, it looks like Blizzard was better prepared for the surge than many expected.
