Sony Confirms PlayStation 6 Development Is on Track, but the Console Is Still a Long Way Off
The company aims to make significant progress next fiscal year, but the PS6 release date remains unknown.
Sony has confirmed that development of the next-generation PlayStation is progressing according to plan. Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said during a presentation of the latest financial results that the company aims to make significant progress on preparations for the new platform in the next fiscal year, which begins in April 2027.
The company has yet to reveal specific plans or a release date for PlayStation 6, but Tao said console development is well on schedule. Sony is also planning to invest in the new platform starting in the next fiscal year. It will share the scale of those investments and further details at a later date.
“Starting in the next fiscal year, we will invest in a new platform. We need to attach great importance to it for future growth and make the necessary investments. At the same time, we must maintain the healthy operation of our platform and carefully consider how to invest as wisely as possible,” Tao explained.
Sony expects PlayStation 5 sales to gradually decline, which is natural at this stage of the console’s life cycle. It sold 2.6 million consoles in the three months ended September 30, bringing total PS5 sales to 97.9 million. The platform continues to grow, however, and recorded a record 127 million monthly active users in September.
Sony’s gaming division also increased its revenue and operating profit, by 9 and 89 percent year over year, respectively. The company raised its financial forecasts, citing strong sales of games from both third-party and first-party studios as one reason. GTA 6 is also expected to play a significant role, with analysts saying anticipation for its arrival is supporting interest in PlayStation. Marvel's Wolverine has also sold more than 2.4 million copies since its release in September.
Sony also addressed rising memory component prices, which are making electronics manufacturing more difficult. The company says it is managing the issue by combining cost reductions with price adjustments and promotional offers. It has also already secured enough memory to cover expected sales in the next fiscal year.
The exact release date for PlayStation 6 remains unknown. Sony chief Hiroki Totoki previously confirmed that the company had not yet decided when to launch the console. Some analysts expect the next generation to arrive in 2028, while others believe the PS5’s life cycle will be longer and the PS6 will launch later. Sony’s latest comments mainly confirm that preparations are ongoing, not when the new console will arrive.
