Rockstar is gradually revealing more details about the world of Grand Theft Auto VI, this time focusing mainly on how it is creating Leonida. In an interview with LOVE Magazine, the developers describe a world where there is practically no such thing as conventional “background.” Everything players see around them is intended to feel like content they simply aren’t paying attention to at the moment.
James Horton, who leads open-world writing at Rockstar, explains that as players move through busy areas, they will pick up snippets from potentially hundreds of different conversations. But if they focus on something specific, the game should offer another layer of detail. Individual places and situations are designed to hold up even when players choose to stop and examine them more closely.
The world will also feature fictional political campaigns, robocalls, radio ads, and political talk shows. Topics won’t unfold only right in front of players, but will also spill over into radio, advertising, and other layers of the surrounding world.
Rockstar doesn’t want to simply copy modern-day America. It plans to push reality even further through GTA’s signature satire, making it bigger, more absurd, and more grotesque. The writers also drew inspiration from conspiracy theories and people’s strange reactions to everyday events.
Leonida’s radio stations are expected to take a similar approach, satirically responding to modern social issues and so-called culture wars. Rockstar wants the world of GTA VI to feel like an exaggerated version of reality while offering new details practically everywhere players choose to look.
The new information also touched on the area of Ambrosia, which, according to the interview, is inspired by parts of Florida around Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee. Here too, Rockstar plans to combine real-world references with the heavily exaggerated version of Florida that is typical of the GTA series.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
