Sony Has Sold Meta Hundreds of VR Technology Patents
Sony may be done with VR.
Sony appears to be gradually scaling back its VR activities. According to ZDNet Korea , the company is transferring a total of 419 patents related to VR, AR, and mixed reality technologies to Meta. The deal was reached in December 2025, and 43 U.S. patents were officially transferred between June and September this year.
The package includes 180 U.S. patents and another 239 registered in Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe. They cover technologies Sony worked on from around 2010 to 2022, including displays for VR headsets, imaging systems, and other augmented reality solutions. Meta is gaining an extensive technology portfolio that it can use to develop future generations of its headsets and smart glasses.
For Sony, the move raises questions about the future of PlayStation VR. The current PSVR 2 headset launched in 2023 for PlayStation 5 and later received PC support through a separate adapter. The patent sale may indicate that Sony no longer plans to make significant investments in the next generation of VR hardware, making a potential PSVR 3 increasingly unlikely. We aren’t really expecting one either.
Sony has not yet officially confirmed anything regarding its VR activities.
