Ubisoft is Taking Beyond Good & Evil 2 Back to Single-Player
Co-op didn’t suit the franchise, so the team is returning to the original concept.
After years in development, Beyond Good & Evil 2 still hasn’t found a clear gameplay identity. According to a new report by Origami, the project remains in pre-production despite massive investment and hundreds of developers working on it. Ubisoft has been developing the game since 2017, though its first announcement dates back even further.
At least 250 people are reportedly working on the project at Ubisoft Montpellier alone, but development keeps returning to the basic question of what kind of game Beyond Good & Evil 2 should be. The team has tried several concepts, from smaller online groups and open multiplayer to co-op for four or two players.
The latest version is said to be primarily a single-player story-driven adventure that won’t require a constant internet connection, while still offering the option to play co-op. Its combat system is reportedly set to take inspiration from Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man games.
According to sources, the game has a strong technological foundation in the form of the Voyager engine, but the core gameplay concept remains a problem. Ubisoft is now preparing for another major internal milestone, which will determine whether the game moves into full production. However, given the company’s current restructuring, there are concerns that failure to meet the milestone could mean the project is canceled for good.
Some developers are reportedly already doubtful that the game will ever be completed. One source who spent six years working on it even said that an exceptionally extensive analysis of the entire development process will be needed to understand the causes of its problems.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is gradually becoming one of the most prominent examples of troubled development in the games industry. Nearly ten years after it was announced in 2017, it’s still unclear whether the game will even enter production, let alone be released. For now, however, these changes have not been officially confirmed by Ubisoft and are based on information in Origami’s report.
