Nintendo Switch 2 Hacked: First Jailbreak Enables Homebrew and Game Mods

Nintendo Switch 2 has received its first working jailbreak. The new exploit lets users run custom code and homebrew apps on the console, modify games, and back up save files. According to the information available, it also works on the latest firmware and requires no hardware modifications.

However, this is not yet a full, permanent system jailbreak. It is tethered, so it must be activated every time the console restarts. This requires a specific backward-compatible game from the original Switch, which is used to launch the exploit.

The attack relies on a 32-bit integer overflow bug involving arrays. This enabled the initial execution of custom code, followed by changes to process permissions and exploitation of the way the system loads additional software components.

The author also demonstrated the exploit directly in Mario Kart World, adding new characters to the game, including Peter Griffin and Hatsune Miku. The jailbreak already points to the potential for mods, which have been practically out of reach on Switch 2 until now.

It is also notable that AI tools, including OpenAI Codex, were used during development. They helped with code analysis and finding a way through the system's various security layers. AI is also beginning to speed up the work of security researchers and the modding community in this area.

The jailbreak could eventually pave the way for further experiments. Modders might take a closer look at the implementation of NVIDIA DLSS on Switch 2, create more extensive game modifications, or try unofficial ports and emulation. The original Switch has already shown how far the community can go with an open system, including running PC games.

Nintendo will likely respond quickly, though. Since the game required to launch the exploit is known, the company could remove it from the eShop and prepare a vulnerability patch in one of its upcoming system updates.

For now, the first Switch 2 jailbreak is more the beginning of a new chapter than a complete console jailbreak. It already shows, however, that the modding and homebrew scene is beginning to take shape on the new generation of Switch.
