Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux Updates Surprise with DLSS 5 Support, Significantly Improving Character Faces

Yesterday’s next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux brought another unexpected improvement. Both games now support NVIDIA DLSS 5 Neural Rendering, although 4A Games did not mention it at all in the official changelog.

The new technology uses AI to modify the final image, with the most noticeable changes appearing on characters. Their faces have more realistic skin, more natural lighting and better-rendered details. The original 2014 models therefore look considerably more modern, although the characters’ geometry itself remains unchanged.

DSOGaming has already made comparisons, with the difference most noticeable in close-ups of faces. Environments change only minimally, and players are unlikely to notice most of the adjustments during normal gameplay. The developers may have deliberately limited Neural Rendering primarily to characters, since DLSS 5 allows the effect’s intensity to be adjusted separately for different objects and materials.

Although the performance impact is noticeable and the feature costs dozens of fps, these are older games that run at around 250–300 fps on high-end cards, so it is not a major issue. The technology is available on supported GeForce RTX 50 cards and RTX Spark systems, and players can turn it off separately.

But even DLSS 5 can’t fix those plastic-looking hair textures:

Interestingly, Metro 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux have become some of the first games to officially support DLSS 5, right after NBA 2K27. They have therefore beaten Hogwarts Legacy, which is set to get the technology on November 5. It is not yet clear whether 4A Games plans to use DLSS 5 in the upcoming Metro 2039, which is scheduled for release on February 4, 2027.
