This time, it’s not a game data leak or insider speculation. The HLX name came directly from a Valve composer at an industry conference, and his colleague’s reaction suggests he probably wasn’t supposed to mention it.

With The Game Awards just around the corner, Half-Life fans once again have reason to revive their hopes for an announcement of a sequel to the legendary series. This time, however, it’s not another alleged leak, mysterious file, or tip from an anonymous insider. The name HLX, which has long been linked to the possible development of Half-Life 3, was mentioned directly by a Valve employee. And judging by his colleagues’ reactions, it probably wasn’t entirely planned.
It happened at GameSoundCon, where Valve composer and sound designer Mike Morasky took part in a panel about the company’s approach to an open and flexible audio engine. In response to a question about managing the number of sounds playing simultaneously, he explained various technical solutions Valve uses to optimize audio.
When the discussion turned to the HDR system, which helps manage the dynamic range of sound, Morasky gave some specific examples. “Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on,” he said casually, as if it were a well-known game.
His colleague David Feise, sitting right beside him, had a more interesting reaction. As soon as Morasky said HLX, Feise turned to him and whispered something that sounded like “nice job” or “you did it.” He then quickly wrapped up the answer, saying that sound groups alone would warrant an hour-long talk and that anyone interested could discuss them after the panel. Morasky gave a nervous laugh.
And that wasn’t all. At the end of the presentation, Feise added: “Good job, you only said HLX once.”
The name HLX itself is not new. It first gained attention in early 2024, in the data for a Counter-Strike 2 update. Fans noticed strings that resembled the HLVR name used during the development of Half-Life: Alyx. Since then, HLX has regularly appeared in speculation about the next game set in the Half-Life universe, but Valve has never officially confirmed what the name refers to.
Interestingly, Morasky had a similar moment in 2025. During one of his appearances, fans thought he nearly let the name slip when he began to say something resembling HLX, but changed it to Alyx at the last moment. This time, however, he said the full name without hesitation.
The latest comment is therefore a fairly strong indication that HLX is not just a leftover from the data of older updates, but the name of a project Valve developers are still working on. It also appears to have its own technical solutions for the audio system, suggesting active work on its technology.
Of course, this still doesn’t automatically mean it’s Half-Life 3. Valve has not announced a new game, confirmed its title, or given an announcement date. So far, the connection between HLX and a Half-Life sequel is based primarily on years of leaks and clues.
On the other hand, we now have at least confirmation that Valve developers themselves talk about HLX as a specific project. And with December’s The Game Awards approaching, we can expect another wave of speculation about whether we’ll finally get the announcement players have been waiting almost two decades for.
