Cloud Imperium Games’ long-awaited space action game Squadron 42 is back in the spotlight. The developers have released a new trailer and launched the game’s official Steam page, where you can now add it to your wishlist. The game is still scheduled for release in Q2 2027.
Squadron 42 will be a standalone story campaign set in the Star Citizen universe. Players will take on the role of a recruit in the United Empire of Earth Navy and eventually find themselves on the front lines of a galactic war. The developers promise a highly cinematic story in which players will live, work, and fight alongside their crew.
Gameplay will combine several styles. Players can expect space combat in fighter ships, on-foot combat, and exploration of vast ships, space stations, and distant bases. The game will alternate between action sequences and quieter moments aboard the ship, with opportunities to interact with other crew members.
Cloud Imperium Games also stresses that players won’t be passive participants in the story. They will gradually carve out their own place in the military, earning rank and reputation, while decisions at key moments will form part of the story experience.
The cast remains one of Squadron 42’s biggest draws. The game features well-known Hollywood actors, including Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, and Mark Strong. The new trailer also continues the strongly cinematic style the game has showcased since its earliest previews.
The Steam page also confirms several technical features. Squadron 42 will support achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR, and Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Players will need a Roberts Space Industries account, which can be linked to a Steam account.
After years of development, Squadron 42 is finally getting closer to release. If the current schedule holds, the game will arrive on PC sometime between April and June 2027. You can add the game to your Steam wishlist.
