Original Diablo Gets a First-Person View, Bringing Classic Doom to Mind

The legendary 1997 game Diablo has received an interesting mod that swaps its traditional isometric view for a first-person perspective. The result brings classic Doom games to mind, giving the original’s dark dungeons and enemies an entirely new atmosphere.
The project comes from YouTuber Drelvak, who used the open-source port DevilutionX and AI tools to modify the game so it can be played from the player character’s perspective. The original textures have been applied to 3D geometry, while the enemies retain their distinctive 2D look. The combination of 3D environments and 2D sprites is what brings the first two Doom games to mind.
Notably, the mod preserves Diablo’s original gameplay and balance. What changes most is how players experience the world, explore the dungeons, and fight enemies. The mod is not publicly available yet, but its creator has suggested he might release it in the future.
A similar option is already available for Diablo II: Resurrected through the D2R-3D mod, which lets players play from both first- and third-person perspectives. It is already available, although it still has a few bugs.
Meanwhile, another modder showcased Diablo 1 Remake, which improves the original Diablo’s graphics with higher-resolution textures and ray-traced lighting.
