No Man’s Sky Is Coming to iPhone and iPad on October 28, With the Full Universe and a Free Trial
This isn’t a scaled-down version: players will get the full game, including more than 40 major updates, and can play on older supported iPhones.
No Man’s Sky is coming to iPhone and iPad on October 28. Hello Games has announced a mobile version that will bring the game’s entire procedurally generated universe to Apple devices. Pre-orders open on October 12 as part of Indie Games Week on the App Store, and players will be able to try the game for free at launch.
According to studio founder Sean Murray, the idea came about a few years ago, shortly after the Mac version was announced. One team member suggested that the game might run on an iPhone, too. Murray didn’t believe it at first, but after trying it out, the technical challenge became another project for a team that had already brought No Man’s Sky to virtual reality and Nintendo Switch.
The mobile version won’t be a simplified edition. It includes the entire universe and more than 40 major updates, including the recent COSMOS update and the larger Voyagers update, which introduced the ability to build your own large spaceships. However, two features found on PC and consoles will be missing at launch: multiplayer and settlements. Hello Games plans to continue developing the mobile version based on player feedback and interest, much as it did with the original Switch version.
The developers have reworked the touch controls to make it easy to switch between exploring planets, piloting ships, driving vehicles, and controlling mechs. They paid particular attention to crafting and inventory management, which take up a lot of players’ time in survival games. External controllers and streaming to a TV will also be supported, and iPad users can even use a mouse and keyboard.
Hello Games also says the game will take up less than 5 GB of storage. The developers have optimized battery consumption and device heat as well, so players can play for longer without significant overheating. No Man’s Sky will support iPhone 11 and newer models, as well as the third-generation iPad Air and newer devices in that line.
