A 24 GB GeForce RTX 5080 Could Arrive as Early as December

According to new information, NVIDIA is accelerating preparations for a 24 GB version of the GeForce RTX 5080. The new model could arrive as early as December 2026 or possibly in January 2027, offering 50% more graphics memory than the current version.

Board Channels reports that NVIDIA is gradually planning to end shipments of both the RTX 5090D V2 and the current 16 GB RTX 5080 in China. The 24 GB GDDR7 RTX 5080 is then expected to become the main high-end model for that market.

The manufacturer is also said to have enough stock of the current 16 GB version for roughly another two months. That would align with a new card launching around the turn of December and January. A January release would also make sense given CES 2027, where NVIDIA could officially unveil the card.

It could be called the RTX 5080 SUPER

It is not yet clear whether NVIDIA will keep the RTX 5080 name or call it the RTX 5080 SUPER. Previous leaks said the RTX 5080 SUPER would feature a GB203-450 chip, higher clock speeds, 24 GB of GDDR7 memory, and faster 32 Gbps memory chips. With the 256-bit bus unchanged, bandwidth would increase from the current 960 GB/s to 1,024 GB/s.

Power consumption was also expected to increase. While the current RTX 5080 has a 360 W TBP, the SUPER version was said to reach as much as 415 W. If NVIDIA uses these specifications for the upcoming 24 GB card, it would be more than just a memory upgrade—it would also be a slightly more powerful model.

However, if the GPU and its clock speeds remain unchanged, the main new feature will be the larger amount of VRAM. That could be particularly useful for gaming at high resolutions, professional applications, and running AI models locally.

Graphics card prices are already very high

The new card is arriving at a time when graphics card and memory prices are rising sharply again. DRAM manufacturers, including SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron, have warned of ongoing memory availability issues that could persist for several more years.

The RTX 5080, which had an original suggested retail price of $999, is already selling for more than $2,000 in some markets. The RTX 5090 could exceed $7,000, despite its original price of $1,999.

The 24 GB RTX 5080 is therefore unlikely to be cheap. Its higher memory capacity could also make it more appealing to users running AI workloads on GPUs, which could make the cards even harder for gamers to find.

NVIDIA has not yet officially confirmed the existence of the 24 GB RTX 5080 or its release date. It is also unclear whether it will be a global model or initially intended primarily for the Chinese market.
